Wakefield to Selby – for York

Starting in Wakefield nearby the new Hepworth Gallery we pass along the Aire and Calder navigation through a variety of scenery and past the quite amazing Stanley Ferry Aqueduct.

Thought to be the largest cast iron aqueduct in the world two cast iron segmental arch open web ribs span the river, held in place by masonry abutments.

The cast iron trough is 165ft long, 24ft wide and 8ft 6in deep, and is suspended from the arches by 35 two and a quarter inch diameter wrought iron hangers at 3ft centres and holds 940 tons of water.

We pass through a number of the large fully automated navigation locks before passing onto the little used Selby Canal stopping Selby lock looking out onto the tidal River Ouse. A short taxi or train ride will take you into York itself.

This cruise takes in a little used canal, the interesting navigation, scenic views, and the chance to visit the Hepworth Gallery and a possible trip to York.
